Building Your Link Popularity - The Key To SEO:
Remember Not Just Any Link Will Do.
Rule #1: Goggle thinks links to your site are important. In fact, they're one of the most important component of the way that Goggle determines ranks for the web pages listed in its index. So it stands to reason that you would want to get as many links to your site as possible, right?
But it's not that really simple.
Goggle knows that if they just count the number of incoming links without paying attention to quality, searchers won't get great results, and they may stop using Goggle and switch to Yahoo!
So adding links willy-nilly and not paying attention to their source or the quality of the web sites that those links are on probably won't get you the results you seek. Therefore you have to pay attention to what kinds of links Goggle does and doesn't like.
Let's start with what Goggle doesn't like:
Goggle has publicly stated that it doesn't like paid links. Whether or not that's true - and I don't think it is by the way - it's their official position.
The reason is because Goggle wants to identify the sites with the best content for searchers, not the sites whose owners have the deepest pockets. So Goggle tries to identify purchased links in at least two ways that matter to you.
Goggle has started to discount incoming links from "link farms," which are web pages whose content is only links to other sites, and link directories.
In addition, they have even started to discount reciprocal links. You may even be penalized for linking to a link farm because Goggle considers link farming a form of spam.
Though a good rule of thumb to remember is this:
You WON'T get penalized if "bad sites" link TO you; but you CAN get penalized if YOU link to a bad site.
Goggle also figures that people who buy links will buy a lot of them all at once, so it discounts or dampens the impact of links that are added in batches.
The lesson for you is that for maximum impact you need to add links consistently and at a steady rate over time.
On the flip side of linking:
Goggle likes links from important directories, like Yahoo! and DMOZ.com. It especially likes links from popular directories where human beings oversee the adding and classification of listings and links.
Goggle also rewards incoming links from popular web sites. This is the "We judge you by the company you keep" idea, applied to search engine ranking. A link from a site like IBM, for example, counts for more than a link from a less popular site.
This is also where we get into things like Page Rank (PR). As a rule, the more links you get from "high PR sites" the better.
Another thing Goggle likes to see is incoming links from lots of different sites. This is pretty straightforward as well. Goggle figures that it's a good thing if lots of sites think you're providing valuable content.
Additionally, Goggle likes to see that those sites that link to you to be "theme-relevant." This is a biggie. In other words Goggle wants the sites your link comes from and the nature of the link to tie to the theme of your site.
If your site is devoted to small business links you want links from sites and to content relevant to small business.
There's bad news and good news in all of this. The bad news is that there's no trick or quick fix to getting lots of good inbound links, but that's the good news, too.
The best way to get lots of the kind of back links Goggle likes to see is to offer a content-rich site that other sites want to link to.
So, set to work creating your content and letting people know what you've got. That's the best route to long term success and great rankings, too.
If you are just getting started, go ahead and spend the $299.00 for a Yahoo! directory listing. It's well worth the money. Then start a directory submission campaign to have your site listed on as many web directories as you can.
There are hundreds and hundreds. You don't need to be (or should be for that matter) in all of them. But having a few dozen listings in respected high PR web directories will jump start the back links to your web site.
